Sand filter septic bed under construction at a Colorado property

Sand Filter Septic System Service

A sand filter adds a treatment stage between the tank and the dispersal area. Colorado counties permit them where soils are too tight, too coarse, or too shallow for a conventional field.

Sand filter system A sand filter system passes septic tank effluent through a bed of sand for additional treatment before it reaches the dispersal area. The sand bed can be open or buried, and flow is usually dosed by a pump.

Sand filters are used where soil or groundwater will not accept standard effluent, so the filter bed is a required part of the permit, not an upgrade.

The situation

How a sand filter works

Effluent leaves the septic tank and is dosed evenly across a bed of clean sand. As it moves down through the media, bacteria on the sand grains treat it. The treated water is then collected and sent to a small dispersal area or discharged to the soil beneath.

Sand filters fail when the tank ahead of them is neglected. Solids blind the surface of the media, water ponds on top, and the dosing pump runs against a bed that will not accept it. Keeping the tank pumped and the filter or screen clean is the whole maintenance story.

How the job runs

How we service a sand filter system

  1. Service the tank first

Everything downstream depends on the tank keeping solids out of the filter bed.

  2. Check dosing

We test the pump, floats, and timer so the bed gets even doses instead of one flood.

  3. Inspect the media surface

Ponding, odor, and biomat at the surface tell us how much life is left in the bed.

  4. Verify distribution laterals

Plugged orifices concentrate flow and ruin one section of an otherwise good bed.
